Blood Brothers
It was the most unforgettable experience the first time I went to the Theatre Royal for the show Blood Brothers. I went on a Tuesday night; I chose this to avoid the crowds. Surprisingly the audience filled the whole hall. I was lucky to get the last seat because I arrived 5mins late.

Indeed, I was overwhelmed by the vivid show; and put myself into the story of the performance. It told a captivating tale of twin boys, who had become separated at birth by poor circumstances. The father went away, the unemployed mother had several children needing to be fed, and also there were other daily bills which needed to be paid.

in addition, the mother was pregnant again, expecting twins.  As a practical solution the mother made an agreement with another woman who was unable to conceive a baby. The agreement was for each of the mothers to take one of the twins each. and also  the second mother pretended to be pregnant and the boy she took over was treated as if he was her real son not an adopted one. However, the mothers promised they will keep away from each other and live their own life.

Unfortunately,  the promise to keep their lives separate was broken by a twist of fate. The twins got to know each other when they were nearly 8 years old. Nevertheless,  they become good friends and without knowing that they were, in fact true brothers they were so close that they named themselves as blood brothers, and swore they would help each other in their life. Meanwhile, the mothers decided move away from each other when they became aware that the brothers had formed a close friendship.

Fate sometimes results in something you can not escape from. Even though they had moved away after several years by which time they were adults, they met again and also they had both fallen in love with the same girl. One of the brothers decided to keep away to try and avoid the obvious turmoil.  However, they had been brought up in different family surroundings. One brother lived with a rich family and had more chance to receive a better education, and he certainly got a good job, which meant that there was a significant difference compared with the life of the other brother who had stayed in the poor family.

Life can always experience changes; everyone would expect any change to their life to be for the better, not for the worse. The poor mothers’ economic collapse affected the basic life of the family, and they became trapped into a difficult situation again. Her boy of the twins could not cope with this suffering, he indulged in drugs and other unlawful behaviour then ended up in jail.

Even if In that difficult situation his wife who still tried to help him back to a normal life but realising her limited capability, then asked for help from his husband’s ‘blood brother‘. Things went from bad to worse when her husband saw his wife with his ‘blood brother’ - he started firing a gun with the intention of killing him. Then their real mother arrived, told them to stop trying to kill, and proclaimed that they are, in fact, real brothers who had become separated following their birth. This was no avail, the brother with the gun shot his brother and then himself as well. Finding out the truth caused both of them to die.

The show ended, but I have to say that my emotions had continued throughout the progress of the show.  I do understand the tough life of the single mother who struggled to feed 5 children, and I also felt sad at the irreversible fate. Who was wrong? Nobody should be blamed for events which fate is not able to change.

The clapping filled the whole hall; the actors had to come out over and over to receive the praise. As for me, I forgot myself till I felt the pain in my hands.  Blood Brothers has been a triumph around the world, scooping up no less than four awards for Best Musical in London and seven Tony nominations on Broadway. It is now in its 21st phenomenal year in the West End.
